Progressives should support Tittl for Assembly

There is no progressive candidate in the race for 25th Assembly District. While Jim Brey is running as the Democratic candidate, he opposes marriage equality, supports vote-suppressing photo-ID requirements, and supports driving down the wages and benefits of public workers through outsourcing and privatization.

He supports “parts” of Act 10, Gov. Walker’s radical and divisive public union-busting bill; he says “parts,” although I haven’t heard him say which parts, if any, that he doesn’t support. And he opposed the Democratic Party recall campaigns, which succeeded in slowing Gov. Walker’s anti-family agenda by flipping the state Senate to Democratic control.

We don’t have a progressive candidate in this election in part because the Democratic Party prohibits local parties from endorsing and supporting primary candidates that actually support the values of the party. On the other hand, Republican candidate Paul Tittl genuinely embraces the values of his party, however wrong they may be.

So it is understandable that there is disagreement among progressives on what to do now. Voting for Jim Brey is voting for regressive, clearly un-Democratic polices. Voting for Jim Brey is to continue our legacy of a supposedly “Democratic” politician undermining the ideals of the party platform from within the party.

I encourage progressives to join me in voting for Paul Tittl for Assembly.
