Party-line voting not always the way go go

Letters To The Editor

I am a Democrat by value less than by label. The world view held by Democratic icons like Roosevelt, Truman and Bob Lafollette are at my core. When a candidate claiming to be a Democrat comes along and rejects those values it becomes necessary to step away from the partisan label and consider the individual.

Over the last decade I have found myself at odds with Mr. (Jim) Brey on a raft of issues. He has been at the center of every fiscal and ethical disaster at both city and county, from the PPP payola scandal to the diversion of TIF funds to hide city deficits. The list is too long to print. People are tired of partisanship. It opens us up to the charge that all politicians are all alike. In this case it’s true. Orwell called it “nationalism,” which he defined as “power-hunger tempered by self deception.”

Here, the label is the deception. No civic purpose is served by party line voting if the values are not preserved. I refuse to promote the candidacy of Jim Brey. His presence in my party is itself a deception and a perversion of Democratic values.
